This recurring language of self-similar patterns became the starting point for Fractal Unit.

The work explores the idea that we are connected beyond the limits of our immediate understanding. I found myself drawn to the miracle of birth, life, death, and renewal, and to the possibility that these cycles echo through nature in endlessly repeating forms. To me, this painting brings together those emotions with the rhythmic repetition and infinite scaling that define fractal structures.

The spider-like forms surrounding the central figures create a protective nest, holding the moment of birth within a field of organic energy. They speak of a mother’s instinct to shelter her child, while also suggesting that this protection extends beyond the physical world into an unseen realm of connection and presence.

The palette is bold, warm, and luminous, emphasising the vitality of a figure in constant transformation. Fractal Unit reflects my belief that we are part of something continuous and interconnected. Fractal patterns seem to emerge across every scale of existence—from microscopic structures to the spiral forms found throughout the cosmos—and contemplating this fills me with a profound sense of spirituality.

I also see the central figure as a saint-like presence, reminiscent of a swami: someone who has become completely at one with herself. She embodies inner stillness amidst perpetual transformation, suggesting that unity is found not through resisting change, but by becoming fully part of it.

120 cm × 120 cm. Throughout history, saints, monks, shamans and mystics from many traditions have sought to transcend the individual self in pursuit of something greater than the ego. This painting became my reflection on that universal search.

The absence of facial features is intentional. Rather than portraying a specific person, I wanted the figure to become anonymous, allowing the viewer to inhabit the space themselves. The circular lines that replace the face suggest a mind in continuous motion—a meditation on the countless thoughts, memories and neural pathways that gradually dissolve into stillness. They also echo the self-similar movement found in fractal geometry, where simple forms repeat to create infinite complexity.

The golden halo references centuries of religious iconography, yet here it becomes a symbol of awareness rather than sanctity. It represents the possibility that enlightenment is not something bestowed upon a chosen few but a potential that exists within every human being.

Behind the figure unfolds a labyrinth of interconnected marks that can be read as maps, neurons, roots or branching fractal systems. These shifting structures blur the boundary between the inner and outer worlds, suggesting that consciousness is not isolated but woven into the larger patterns of nature itself.

While painting Fractal Saint, I found myself returning to the idea that identity is something fluid rather than fixed. The more we attempt to define ourselves, the more those definitions begin to dissolve. What remains is presence. Perhaps the saint is simply the person who has recognised that the boundaries between self and universe are an illusion. In the language of fractals, every small part contains the echo of the whole.

90 cm × 100 cm. Acrylic and gold leaf.
